Jim Duffy has suggested Nils Koppen may have played a part in Philippe Clement’s decision to reveal Todd Cantwell’s transfer request at Rangers.
The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from Glasgow throughout the summer transfer window and Philippe Clement has confirmed he has asked to leave Glasgow and will be sold [Heart and Hand, 24 July].
Clement had left his post-match press conference at St Andrew’s before returning minutes later to update the press on Cantwell and Clyde 1 pundit Duffy believes he may have held talks with Koppen.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Thursday (25 July) he said: “Maybe he has had a discussion with the director of football and just thought now was the time, or there was a suggestion the news would get out through various sources.
“So, we are not quite sure why Philippe Clement decided to go back in, but he was honest with the supporters and I think the supporters deserve that.
“There is no point in leaving him out of the squad and keeping everything under wraps when you know that player is unhappy, and you believe he is not going to be part of your plans going forward.”
Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers after Philippe Clement transfer update?
Supporters will likely never know why Clement decided to return to his press conference to announce Cantwell’s decision, but it is not out of reach to suggest discussions could have been held with other figures at Ibrox.
As Duffy suggests, the news would have more than likely leaked had Clement not shared this update and it stops the constant speculation about Cantwell’s whereabouts for the remaining weeks of pre-season.
However, the Gers’ public desire to move the Englishman on could harm their negotiating position as the 26-year-old’s valuation will now almost certainly decrease as he is more than less in the shop window.
It will be interesting to see who is interested in securing his signature and how much they are willing to pay before the window slams shut, but it feels unlikely Cantwell will make a step up as he moves away from Rangers.
