Pundit moots Rangers to make 'Creative' signing similar to Jan arrival before Deadline Day

Rangers legend Barry Ferguson says the club may have to be “creative” in the final days of the transfer window to secure their targets.

Writing in his column in the Daily Record [23 August], Ferguson acknowledges Philippe Clement will be frustrated by being unable to shift players not part of his plans, therefore blocking the pathway to fresh signings.

But he claims that in the same way the Gers did with Mohamed Diomande – securing the Ivorian on a loan-to-buy deal which was paid this summer – new arrivals may have to be brought in on pay-later deals.

“We already know that Clement’s plans to sign fresh faces are on hold until the likes of Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi go. The manager said as much at his press conference last week. I can imagine that will frustrate him,” Ferguson admitted.

“But he must obviously have known this was a possibility when he signed his contract. The club might have to be creative over the next week, like they were back in January signing Mohamed Diomande on loan with an obligation to buy.”

Rangers need new faces either way

Rangers may have brought in eight signings so far this summer – if you include the purchase agreement on January signing Diomande – but more are needed, and everyone who is anyone knows as much.

Clement most of all is aware that the current squad he has at his disposal is not sustainable enough to challenge Celtic on up to four fronts this year.

Supporters will be sincerely hoping the Light Blues have some irons in the fire if they are unable to part with the “bomb squad” players such as Cantwell and Hagi.

If they are unable to shift the duo – or the likes of Scott Wright who has been touted around to EFL clubs – the Belgian may have no choice but to look to reintegrate them, which could be easier said than done for both team morale and financial reasons.

It’s a huge week for the Gers, and whilst there was a spell this summer when their recruitment looked pretty rosy, it has stagnated somewhat following their sluggish start to the campaign.
