Pundit shares 'Worry' over player he's seen Rangers linked with

Derek Ferguson says it is “amazing” how quickly football can change as he warned Rangers against a potential move for Hearts skipper Lawrence Shankland.

The Gers have been regularly linked with Shankland, who recently admitted that he will leave Tynecastle once his contract expires next summer.

Pundit Ross McCormack believes the Gers should be looking to bring in the forward as early as January to bolster their attack [Open Goal, 26 November].

However, asked if he agrees with that sentiment, Ferguson suggested Rangers would be better off looking elsewhere given Shankland’s disappointing form this term.

“I was one of those calling for Rangers to get Shankland through the door at the start of the season,” Ferguson told Ibrox News. “But I’ve seen him a couple of times live this campaign and his body language hasn’t been great.

“He’s really struggling at the moment and is bereft of confidence. He seems a confident lad from the interviews I’ve seen, but the proof is in the pudding. He’s paid to score goals and isn’t doing that at the moment.

“What that does is creates a little doubt. It’s amazing how quickly things can turn in football. Three months ago I’d have had him at the club, absolutely. Now it’s in the balance.

“He’s still a good player, captain experience and a good age, but at the moment the way he’s playing, his body language, it’d be a slight worry.”

Shankland has scored 62 goals in 166 appearances since joining Hearts from Belgian side Beerschot in 2022.

The 29-year-old scored 21 of those goals in the Scottish Premiership last season, seeing him finish top of the goalscoring charts.

There is little wonder so many were clamouring for him to make the switch to Ibrox, but three goals in 16 league outings this term is very underwhelming.

It would be a risk-free signing in many ways, especially if a deal is struck in the summer when he is a free agent, but it might be better to cast the net further out.
