Philippe Clement and Rangers face a “season-defining month” at Ibrox after the international break, according to Stephen McGinn.
The Light Blues currently sit third in the Premiership with their Europa League hopes in the balance having already booked their place in the League Cup semi-finals against Motherwell at Hampden Park.
While some pundits have already written the Gers off in the Europa League, Go Radio pundit McGinn believes a win over Rapid Bucharest will give them a good chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (11 October, 55:50) he said: “They’re coming into a real big period for Philippe Clement off the back of this international break.
“They go to Rugby Park which even when you’re playing really well is a tough venue. They’ve got Bucharest in a European game then they’ve got St Mirren and Aberdeen back to back.
“It’s a season-defining month for Rangers. The Bucharest game, they have to be looking to win if they want to qualify because the games get really tough after that. They go to Olympiacos the game after that so there are some huge games.”
Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement amid Ibrox exit speculation?
It feels as though Clement has always been under some pressure, whether that be from supporters or pundits, from the moment that he arrived in Glasgow last season.
While it was easy to impress in the wake of Michael Beale’s exit, plenty of question marks remain around the Belgian with many fans still questioning just how far he has managed to take the Light Blues forward in the last year.
Ultimately, every Rangers manager is judged on results and Clement will be no different.
If he comes out of this season-defining month still in the Premiership title race, with another League Cup final under his belt and a place in the Europa League knockout stages, he won’t be under any pressure.
However, if by the start of December, the Gers are further adrift of Celtic, out of Europe and have failed to reach the final of the league cup, it won’t just be campaign-defining but tenure-defining for the Belgian.
In reality, every game and therefore every month is important as the manager of an Old Firm side. November will be no different for Clement and he needs to show that he has the chops for the job.
