Philippe Clement’s position at Rangers has been made weaker heading into the clash with Aberdeen, according to Peter Grant.
The Light Blues make the trip to Pittodrie on Wednesday (30 October) as they look to close the gap to both Jimmy Thelin’s Dons and Celtic at the top of the Premiership table.
While the Gers board are understood to be united behind Clement at this stage [Chris Jack, 22 October], Go Radio pundit Grant has suggested the Belgian’s job isn’t secure at Ibrox after recent comments in the media.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (28 October, 7:05) he said: “That’s a big question, you’re right.
“The thing that worries me about Rangers is, they keep changing their backline and I think that’s so, so important. When you’re trying to build a team, your goalkeeper and your back four are the strength of your team.
“For me, at this moment in time, that looks like the weakest because they don’t know who it’s going to be. I know they’ve had injuries at fullback and whatever, but the centre-back pairing, I’m not sure he knows what he wants in there and that is vital.
“I hate managers losing their jobs because I must admit, up to the 3-3 game last year, I thought everything Clement did was excellent. I thought the way he spoke to the media and the way he spoke about his team and what he was trying to put together was excellent.
“I’ve thought since then, it’s been a complete change. Whether that has anything to do with what is going on in the background, I do not know. Whether he’s not been able to be backed to bring in the people that he’s wanted and the strength that he’s needed, I think that has made his position weaker.
“I know he got a new contract, but I think it’s made his position weaker.”
Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement at Ibrox amid exit speculation?
At the time, the decision to hand Clement a new contract at the start of the Premiership season seemed like a demonstration of unity by the Gers’ board to unite behind the manager at Ibrox.
However, it doesn’t seem to have secured the Belgian’s position in Glasgow beyond the opening few months of the campaign as pundits and fans alike are already calling for a change in the Ibrox dugout.
Ultimately, managers don’t tend to last very long at the Old Firm clubs if they’re not winning games and silverware. If Clement does lose to Aberdeen at Pittodrie, he is going to come under immense pressure after the full-time whistle.
Whether that ends in him being sacked is anyone’s guess, but it would be a surprise if questions weren’t asked of his position. Hopefully, the Belgian and his side manage to pull a result out of the bag and end the Dons’ unbeaten start to the campaign.
