Pundit View: Rangers ace likely to get extended time off, 'major unexpected positive' predicted

Barry Ferguson believes that Ianis Hagi could return to play for Rangers next season after positive performances at EURO 2024 with Romania.

The attacking midfielder has impressed at the tournament as his country reached the round of 16 stage for just the second time ever.

Now in an article for the Daily Record (5 July), former Gers man Ferguson has suggested he could feature at Ibrox next season based on his EUROs showings.

He said: “Hagi will probably be given some extra time off but he strikes me as a young man who will want to get back to work as quickly as possible and impress the new man in charge.

“There has never been any doubt about his talent and he’s shown over the last few weeks he’s fully fit and firing again. He could come back in from the cold to become a major unexpected positive.”

Ianis Hagi could be given Rangers second chance

The 25-year-old began his career in Glasgow well after an initial loan move from Genk back in January 2020 which tempted the Gers into a permanent deal.

Since then, Hagi hasn’t quite hit the heights expected of him which has often seen him play second fiddle during his time at Ibrox.

This saw him depart last summer as he joined Deportivo Alaves on a season-long loan where he scored just two goals across 24 games in all competitions [FotMob].

Despite a potentially disappointing campaign, the attacking midfielder was called up to the EURO 2024 squad and has shone.

Romania were one of the surprise packages of the tournament with some great performances in the group stage before being eliminated.

Returning to Ibrox next season, after being a break from football by Philippe Clement, Hagi could prove to be a star for the Gers once again.

With the likes of Tom Lawrence being linked with a move away, the Romanian could slot into the midfield and feature regularly next campaign.

In other Rangers news, the Gers might have already found their Todd Cantwell replacement.
