Pundit View: Tottenham could be tempted by £50m+ offer to sell star player

Paul Robinson has suggested Tottenham would only be tempted to sell Guglielmo Vicario for £50million amid interest from Inter Milan.

The 28-year-old is the subject of transfer interest from the Serie A giants, according to Milan Live [18 September], who are prepared to offer £25million to replace 35-year-old Yann Sommer.

Vicario arrived from Empoli on an initial £17.2million deal last summer and has impressed during his 49 appearances for Spurs since [Sky Sports].

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “It’s not enough. They would need at least double that. He’s been a really good goalkeeper, a really good acquisition. He’s struggled with dominating his box at times and that’s been highlighted.

“He was great last season, though, and he’s kicked on again this season. The cost of replacing Vicario would be more than that. £25million is not money that Spurs need and it’s a position of vital importance.

“If Spurs were to be tempted into selling him, the offer would have to be more than double that. Inter Milan don’t have that to spend on a goalkeeper, so I can’t see that happening.”

Tottenham to sell Guglielmo Vicario for £50million?

It is almost impossible to sign a goalkeeper of Vicario’s calibre for just a little over £17million, so it would seem like a strange decision to sell him unless a real prospect was emerging.

Given his ability in possession, the Italian is almost the perfect shot-stopper for the type of football that Ange Postecoglou is implementing. It is hard to believe the Australian would sign off on his departure.

A £25million fee is far below what Spurs fans would be expecting in return if Vicario were to return to Italy, so it seems unlikely the club will need to find a new shot-stopper anytime soon.
