Nils Koppen will now need to work overtime as Rangers need to secure the services of a defender in the summer.
The Daily Record reported on 2 December that the deal to secure the permanent services of Neraysho Kasanwirjo in the summer is in “major” doubt due to his recent injury setback.
It’s understood that he could spend up to six months on the sidelines as he has returned to Feyenoord, his parent club.
Neraysho Kasanwirjo had hit the ground running at Ibrox
The 22-year-old was used as a Swiss Army knife by Philippe Clement as he’s been deployed as a full-back and a centre-back.
He even offered a better option than James Tavernier at right-back and an alternative to Robin Propper at centre-back.
Given the setback with the 22-year-old’s injury, Koppen must immediately ramp up his scouting and recruitment efforts to secure a reliable, long-term centre-back for the Ibrox outfit.
Nils Koppen must leverage his extensive network to seal another Rangers
The Rangers chief should leverage his extensive network, particularly in markets where the club can find value, like Brazil, Morocco, or lesser-tapped European leagues, as he has done previously with signings like Jefte and Hamza Igamane.
He should focus on players who not only fit the club’s tactical requirements but also have the physical robustness to handle the SPFL’s demands.
Additionally, considering the club’s strategy for youth development and player trading, Koppen might look for a young talent with high resale value or an experienced defender who can mentor younger players, ensuring both immediate impact and future potential.
With the transfer window approaching, early identification and negotiations are crucial to avoid being unprepared or overpaying in a rush to fill the defensive void left by Kasanwirjo’s absence.
In other Rangers news, a sale of a big-money Gers player in 2025 has been mooted after what happened recently.
