Rangers have rejected a formal bid from Trabzonspor for captain James Tavernier, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Writing on his personal X account (19 July), the reliable transfer journalist reports that the Bears have turned down their offer after news broke on Thursday (18 July) of a formal bid [Fabrizio Romano].
Romano reports that the Turkish club will now look to negotiate improved terms to get a deal done with Rangers, meaning a new bid is expected soon.
Rangers have big James Tavernier decision to make
It seems clear now that there is a very real chance of Tavernier leaving Ibrox this summer, it’s just a matter of when and how much the club get for him.
Reports from Turkey suggest that the 32-year-old has already agreed personal terms on a two-year deal with the option for a third year [Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, 18 July], which means he is clearly open to leaving.
But as Philippe Clement said recently, there is a price for everyone (except Jack Butland) and unless that is met then nobody will be leaving.
Tavernier is ageing now and there are already replacements in the squad for him with Dujon Sterling becoming a key player in recent times, but it still won’t be easy to replace him.
The club now must make a decision on the funds they want to bring in to allow him to leave, but an exit certainly seems to be on the cards now.
In other Rangers news, the club want to sign an English striker permanently this summer after he became a free agent.
