Club halt agreed transfer in bid to sign Tavernier as Rangers ready to sell - report

Trabzonspor have put a separate signing on hold to pursue James Tavernier after receiving news that he was available from Rangers, according to Turkiye Gazetesi.

The Turkish outlet reported via their website on 19 July that the Ibrox skipper’s agents contacted the Super Lig club after it became clear that the Light Blues were ready to move on.

As a result of the “surprise” Trabzonspor put a halt to Pedro Malheiro signing from Boavista after an agreement had already been reached in the wake of Thomas Meunier’s sudden exit, and manager Abdullah Avcı will make the final decision.

Sports Digitale journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reported via X on 18 July that Tarvernier has already agreed a deal to join the Turkish side while the Gers haggle over an extra €1million [£842,000] on the transfer fee.

Philippe Clement ready to let Rangers captain leave Ibrox

Trabzonspor have already picked up former senior Light Blues after both John Lundstram and Borna Barisic signed there when their Ibrox contracts expired this summer.

If Tavernier joins them the Turkish side may be risking some of the same malaise that has developed around Govan but the English defender would surely be the pick of the trio.

It appears the admission that Philippe Clement made that everyone bar Jack Butland is available for the right price [Rangers Review, 14 July] may have been communicated internally as well.

The right-back’s agents have seemingly wasted no time in trying to get him a move to join his two former teammates in Turkey and now it appears everything will rest on whether the two clubs can agree a fee.

Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement is prepared to let James Tavernier leave Rangers for the right price.

Nils Koppen and the board will have to work with Clement to decide whether a decent if unspectacular fee is more valuable to them amid their current transfer market logjam than Tavernier and no cash is going forward.

The 32-year-old is surely going to be missed when he does leave but there is a growing sense that now is the right time.

English clubs could now hijack the Turkey move in what could spark a welcome bidding war which would improve chances of receiving the desired asking price [Scottish Sun, 19 July].

In other Ranger news, the Light Blues are tipped to sign a top young sensation and then loan him to a Scottish Premiership rival.
