Pundit View: Tottenham could sign possible Ivan Toney alternative, he fits the bill

Paul Robinson believes Tottenham could sign Lille star Jonathan David if alternative striker deals cannot be struck.

According to Football London [24 June], the Canadian striker is one of the names on Spurs’ wishlist this summer, with reports suggesting he is available for as little as £25million.

With just 12 months left on his contract in Ligue 1, many European clubs have taken notice of the player’s situation, and Spurs are just one of the interested clubs.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “He’s in good form, and if you look at the value of the player, he’s certainly not going to cost anywhere near what Ivan Toney would. But if you’re going into the market, you want to improve the team.

“He’s a good player. When you draw up a wishlist, and that’s a position Tottenham are looking at, I don’t suspect he’s in the top three or four that they want, but he would do a job in that position for a deal that wouldn’t break the bank.

“He’s not in the top four, but if Spurs are unable to get others in and want an out-and-out No.9, he fits the bill.”

Tottenham to sign Jonathan David as last resort

Ange Postecoglou still has the difficult challenge of filling the void left by Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich last season.

However, the attacking arsenal of Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-Min and Richarlison have created some exciting sequences in the final third on occasion.

Add Lille’s star striker into the mix, who has 43 league goals over the past two seasons, and that is an extremely dangerous front line for the Lilywhites to challenge in the Premier League and Europa League with.

David finished the 2023/24 season with 19 goals and four assists in 34 appearances, only being outscored by Kylian Mbappe.
