Rangers chiefs were worried about a potential stand closure at Ibrox after fans let off fireworks in the Europa League tie against Lyon, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported in its print edition [17 October, pg 42] that the club were sweating over potential closures for their game against FCSB on 24 October.

Fans let off pyrotechnics against Malmo and Lyon, which saw the club being fined over £27,000 by UEFA for the two incidents.

UEFA make final Rangers decisions

European competitions are one of the most important sources of revenue for football clubs in this day and age.

As things stand, the Gers have three points on the board in the Europa League table after beating Malmo, but the 4-1 loss to Lyon was damaging.

Philippe Clement must prepare his team to be in the best shape in the coming weeks if he hopes to qualify for the knockout rounds.

While the home faithful will expect Rangers to get past FCSB and Union Saint-Gilloise, Clement will have to be spot-on with his tactics against the likes of OGC Nice, Tottenham and Manchester United.

One could argue the fines could have been avoided, but the fans have a right to make their voices heard — how they should go about it is debatable.

It is a relief that no stands have been ordered to close, as the team will need every fan in Ibrox to back the players from the first whistle to the last.

For now, the board can breathe a sigh of relief; however, seeing what UEFA could do if the fans continue causing trouble at Ibrox will be interesting.
