Martin Keown has admitted that he probably should not joined Everton.
The defender joined the Toffees in 1989 after being sold by Aston Villa and he went on to make over 100 appearances for the club.
However, Keown – now a prominent BBC Sport and talkSPORT pundit after winning the Premier League three times with Arsenal – has confessed that looking back he feels as though this may have been the wrong move with talks from other clubs such as Manchester United on the table at the time.
Speaking on the Peter Crouch Podcast (20 November), Keown said: “I went to Everton, probably shouldn’t have gone to Everton, as Aston Villa were offering me like really low wages shall we say, but they were claiming it was the best offer.
“And then they offered three times more money on the last day, and I was like, well, where’s this come from? But we need to find, who am I playing with?
“You might tell Man United, you might tell Derby, Forest, all the clubs I was in talks with, so I went to Everton.”
Keown’s spell at Everton not a complete waste of time
Although Keown is now looking back on his time at Everton and questioning whether it was the right move to make for his own career, his time at Goodison Park was not a failure as the defender played constantly for the side in the top flight over his four years with the club.
Whilst it’s easy to look back with hindsight and identify the opportunities that may have come around had he moved elsewhere, back in this time the Toffees were a successful side and in his first season with the club, they did occupy top spot in the league and hoped for a while that they could win the league.
In Keown’s final season, he made just 13 league appearances before making the move back to Arsenal where he went on to have the most success in his career, winning three Premier League titles with the North London club.
Therefore, while it is easy to look back and make observations now, if it wasn’t for his time at Everton Keown may not have ended up back at Arsenal in a position to have the success he did with the club. In addition, his move brought in a healthy sum of money for the Toffees too.
Though his spell with the Blues wasn’t the most successful of his career, both parties can no doubt look back with some fondness too.
