Jamie O’Hara was left flabbergasted by an admission from one particular Scottish-based Rangers fan, who claimed he supports the England team over his own nation.
Live on talkSPORT [5 September, 22:41], a Gers fan called ‘Frank’, claiming to be 66, shocked O’Hara and Jason Cundy live on air when he declared his footballing allegiance to England over Scotland due to “the great English players who have played for Rangers”.
The duo were stunned by the claim, and asked where the supporter was born.
When ‘Frank’ responded with Glasgow, O’Hara fired back: “It doesn’t matter if you don’t rate [Scotland], it’s your country. You don’t have to wave the flag, just support your nation.
“These players played for Rangers, not Scotland. You’re from Scotland.”
Rangers fanbase in England
It’s well-known that England carries a lot of support for Rangers, and there is a lot of support south of the border across the Old Firm.
The Gers are often adopted as some English fans’ “second team” on identity standpoint grounds or through family, which divides opinion among die-hard supporters of the club who follow the Light Blues home and away and do not consider another team on their radar.
This instance is of a Scottish-based fan whose family all reside north of the border, yet leans towards the Three Lions – a rare occurrence one must say. He cites English players as his reason, although the more recent importance of Englishmen Steven Gerrard, Jack Butland and James Tavernier down the years could add fuel to that.
The most generous viewpoint on England you tend to see is simply a lack of animosity towards the side but still an ardent support for Scotland when it comes to international football.
In this particular call, Cundy went on to lightheartedly insist the caller spoke in an English accent for the remainder of the conversation – which ‘Frank’, to his credit, attempted.
An interesting few minutes on the radio that’s for sure!
