Rangers must open their purse strings if they are to sign FC Porto attacker Goncalo Borges, according to Record.
The newspaper has reported in its print edition [29 July, page 31] that the Gers offered £5million, but the offer was much lower than the Portuguese club desired.
It is understood that the player will only consider leaving if an “irrefutable proposal” arises, with £12.6million already being mooted as a price tag for the 23-year-old [O Jogo].
Rangers push to seal Goncalo Borges transfer at Ibrox
Due to the shoestring budget at Ibrox, Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen are having to work tirelessly to fund new deals this summer.
The Scottish sides often have to discover exciting new gems rather than splash the cash on expensive transfers, given the signings of Clinton Nsiala, Hamza Igamane and Jefte.
Borges’ profile looks to fit into that category, though the Gers must look elsewhere if his contract demands are extortionate and Porto holds out for over £12million.
Clement has already brought a lot of exciting attacking talent to Ibrox this summer, so while the 23-year-old should be considered, the club must not panic and open their pockets for the transfer.
The 23-year-old has impressed for the Porto B team, notching 11 goals and eight assists in 78 appearances, but he has not been able to transition over to first-team football perfectly.
He has registered just three assists in 50 appearances for the Blue and Whites, though he has started pre-season on the front foot, scoring in a 4-0 win over Al Nassr on Sunday 28 July.
That may have piqued the Gers’ interest this summer, and given the winger’s ability to play on either flank like Oscar Cortes, he could be a solid option for the Scottish side.
