Allan McGregor has called for the referee who sent Jefte off for Rangers against Dynamo Kyiv to be banned from the Champions League.
The former Gers keeper reacted live on the BBC Sport match coverage of the 2-0 defeat on 13 August to brand the second yellow card for the Brazilian an “absolutely horrific” decision.
Jefte was dismissed in the 50th minute after jumping for a header in a hugely-controversial decision which ultimately changed the game, and McGregor was outraged at what he saw from Marco Guida.
He said (9.41pm): “Especially so early on in the second half. It’s an absolutely horrific decision. I think it’s that bad that I don’t think the referee shouldn’t manage in the Champions League again this season.”
Allan McGregor furious over Rangers red card
Jefte’s first yellow was soft after half an hour would have been unfortunate even if he had been shown a second for a clear foul.
But for a legitimate challenge in the air to be penalised when there wasn’t even a flailing arm caused outrage immediately.
Philippe Clement’s side had given a reasonable account of themselves up until that point, and continued to do so thereafter.
But after nearly half an hour of playing a man down after such a poor decision, which couldn’t be reviewed by VAR as it wasn’t a straight red, the eventually caved to the pressure and conceded two quick goals late on.
Chris Sutton called it a “sore one” for the Light Blues after the final whistle, after a game in which Ridvan Yilmaz was hit by another new injury and carried off in tears.
Clement will have been hoping for as much of a boost to his transfer budget as possible from European qualification but will now have to go without as his half-finished side almost made it through anyway but were undone by a hugely-controversial intervention from the official.
In other Rangers news, the club are set to enter talks to sign another seven-figure striker.
