Rangers transfer target Joe Gelhardt is heading towards an “inevitable” January exit from Leeds United, Football League World reports.

According to the news outlet’s website [11 December], Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers have joined the long list of clubs interested in acquiring the forward’s services in the New Year.

The Gers are said to be interested in bringing the former Celtic target to Ibrox on a loan deal and could steal a march on the interested parties with the inclusion of a purchase option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season [TEAMtalk].

Rangers could land Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt in January

Philippe Clement has the perfect opportunity to have the last laugh over Celtic and bring a long-standing transfer target north of the border to Ibrox.

Brendan Rodgers wanted to add Gelhardt to his attacking ranks at Parkhead last January, but a move collapsed as Leeds could not sanction another domestic loan move due to EFL restrictions.

The Gers were also affected by the restrictions, but they are now seemingly the only Scottish Premiership side willing to take advantage of the availability of the forward, who boasts experience of playing in the English Premier League.

Gelhardt was touted to become “a goal machine” last winter, and despite Hamza Igamane finding his feet at Ibrox as of late, the Light Blues could still benefit from another goalscorer heading into the second half of the campaign.

However, Nils Koppen will have his work cut out negotiating a deal for Gelhardt with interest from several Championship and Belgian Pro League outfits standing in his way.

A deal to bring the former England Under-21s international to Ibrox will be contingent on Leeds’ demands for a potential purchase option to be included in the agreement. Rangers will only pursue the move if they have control over his future.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement’s comments have been slammed ahead of the Gers’ clashes against Tottenham and Celtic.
