Rangers transfers: O'Rourke shares update on January defender signing

Rangers are looking to sign defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that there is “not a huge budget for Philippe Clement to improve his squad.”

The Scottish giants have been hampered by injuries at the back with Ridvan Yimlaz and Neraysho Kasanwirjo both sidelined, while John Souttar was the latest to pick up an issue against Tottenham in the Europa League.

Clement has been left with only two recognised center-backs in Leon Balogun and Robin Propper, stretching his squad to its limit.

Any further injuries or suspensions would lead to Clement having to play people out of position, which is why he’s looking to strengthen in this area of the time.

However, their latest accounts confirmed their net losses increased by £4.1million in the 2023-24 season to £17.2million across the period which is set to hamper them in the transfer market.

Rangers will be dipping into the loan market

Football Insider revealed that Rangers are set to prioritise loan signings in January due to the financial issues at the club.

The board are keen to strengthen the team due to their mixed results, with the Gers currently 11 points off the pace in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers want to add to their squad due to the position they’re in to likely qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League, with the club currently eighth in the group stage table.
