Real Madrid General Manager to face investigation on ‘environmental crime’ due to concerts

Real Madrid’s General Manager and by all accounts, one of the masterminds behind their success in recent years, Jose Angel Sanchez, has been named in a formal complaint about a potential ‘environmental crime’.

Sanchez is also the General Manager and only administrator of Real Madrid‘s sister business Real Madrid Estadio, which has been undertaking work around the stadium and renovations of the Santiago Bernabeu. Cadena Cope report that a complaint has been accepted by a judge, and will now be investigated.

Sanchez and RME will now be required to provide all of the studies carried out into the potential sound pollution that could be caused be the numerous concerts at the Bernabeu over the summer. After numerous noise complaints were submitted to the council between the 26th of April and 15th of July following concerts by the likes of Duki and Taylor Swift, the ‘Victims of the Bernabeu’ group submitted the complaint.

They allege that Sanchez and RME are guilty of violating an urban planning law due to a lack of soundproofing, hence the requests for the relevant documents.

This is the latest in a battle between the local residents around the Bernabeu and Real Madrid. Two complaints were submitted to the European Court of Justice over environmental issues, while in recent weeks, Real Madrid have agreed to limit the number of concerts to 20 per year. Los Blancos also agreed to put in place sound-absorbing sheets for the concerts, but it remains to be seen how effective that is as a method.
