Todd Cantwell should stay at Rangers because the club needs to have some “emotional” players in the team, says Derek Ferguson.

Rangers Review reported on 3 July that the controversial former Norwich midfielder is expected to leave this summer.

He subsequently has yet to be seen in preseason action as Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen struggle to make sales amid claims he has a minor injury issue [Andy Devlin, 12 July].

But ex-Ibrox favourite Ferguson is a fan of the Englishman’s “enthusiasm” and would like to see him kept through the transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “Being a manager you’ve got to manage all these different characters.

“At times Todd has been really good for us, and at times you can see that players can maybe get at him a little bit and he would react to it.

“Sometimes that’s just part of your nature, who you are. Some guys can just brush it off. But we can all see with Todd, I love his enthusiasm, he’s got really good quality at times and personally I’d like to see him stay to be honest.

“You need guys sometimes that are emotional, that play with that in them. You can clearly see that he wants to win, big time, and any time that he comes up against our biggest rivals you could see there were a few words, a few discussions, that can happen.”

Could Philippe Clement keep Todd Cantwell at Rangers?

Rangers
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has had a tricky relationship with Todd Cantwell at times.

Clement has made quite clear that anyone not named Jack Butland is available for the right price this summer [Rangers Review, 14 July] so if a club comes in with a decent bid he will surely take it for Cantwell.

Under the Belgian the 26-year-old has rarely shown the ability he did in his first half-season for Michael Beale and his extracurriculars have worn out patience among some fans and pundits, with even Ferguson admitting the midfielder drives him mad at times.

He has seemingly had a rough relationship with Clement from the start [Keith Jackson, 4 December] so a sale may be best for all parties.

But there doesn’t appear to be a thriving market for his services so the manager may be best served looking to tap in to the ability Cantwell has already shown he has when on form.

In other Rangers news, English clubs could now be about to hijack a high-profile Light Blues exit transfer.
