Trabzonspor are set to return to Rangers with a new bid for captain James Tavernier after their first offer was rejected, the Daily Record reports.
According to the paper’s website late on 19 July the Turkish side are ready to come back to the table in an attempt to beat Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq to the 32-year-old.
Tavernier has scored 125 goals for the Light Blues but Philippe Clement made clear that he would be prepared to sell for the right price [Rangers Review, 14 July] and now Trabzonspor will make an improved bid as they look to reach that amount.
He is believed to have already shaken hands on personal terms for a move while the two clubs look to reach an agreement [Takvim, 19 July].
James Tavernier set for Rangers exit this summer
The defender’s agents are believed to have reacted to his manager’s stance by quickly contacting the Super Lig club who are apparently so keen to bring him in they immediately put an agreed signing on hold to do a deal [Turkiye Gazetesi, 19 July].
Clement and Nils Koppen could do with a similar reaction as they look to shift a number of other senior players who are not likely to be part of the long-term project at Ibrox.
It is probably little surprise that Tavernier is generating the most active response thanks to his incredible scoring numbers, with offers potentially now on the way from England too [Scottish Sun, 19 July]
That is especially true when Trabzonspor are clearly fans of the Light Blues’ work in recent years after signing both John Lundstram and Borna Barisic already this summer on free transfers.
There is believed to be widespread interest across Europe and Saudi Arabia in Cyriel Dessers [Rangers Review, 3 July] and Connor Goldson has been named as a target at Birmingham [Scottish Sun, 30 June] and Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq [Daily Record, 24 April].
Todd Cantwell is also available this summer [Rangers Review, 3 July] while Sam Lammers generated strong interest in the Eredivisie but appears to have been priced out of moves already by his wages.
It seems clear that Tavernier needs to be the first of a few of these names to move on if Rangers are going to be able to bring in the necessary signings so if a deal for the captain can be done soon the hope will be that it opens the floodgates for lucrative sales.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues could now buy a highly-rated sensation and loan him straight to a Scottish Premiership rival for the season.
