'Remarkable': Troy Deeney absolutely baffled by decision he's seen Chelsea make under Enzo Maresca

Chelsea have had their critics in recent times but appear to finally be getting it together on the field at least as we head into the third international break.

The Blues have made a good start to life under Enzo Maresca and very much look in contention for a Champions League spot.

Chelsea take on Arsenal this weekend and should they win, they’d actually go three clear of the Gunners and within a whisker of the top two.

Still, Chelsea have got to get a lot right to be successful and not everything they’ve done has been met with high praise.

And according to Troy Deeney, there’s been one decision of the Maresca era that’s left him scratching his head.

Troy Deeney slams Chelsea for making Enzo Fernandez captain

Speaking on TalkSPORT about the signing of Fernandez, Deeney suggested that the midfielder has not been all that and insisted that as captain, it was definitely a no-go.

“And, also for £105 million, you have got to try every possible way to get him started. They made him captain, which I found remarkable.

“I didn’t see anything that suggested he should be captain. And I don’t see any standout leaders, if I am being totally honest, at Chelsea to go, right, he should be the one.”

What’s been said about Enzo Fernandez’s time at Chelsea?

As Deeney mentions here, Chelsea paid more than £100m to sign Enzo Fernandez and in the main, they’ve not seen a big return on that just yet.

Just over a week ago, Enzo Maresca was left fuming at some sloppy play from Fernandez against Newcastle, while former Liverpool man Graeme Souness has recently said Fernandez will simply never reach his potential at Chelsea.

Still, there is hope for Fernandez to succeed and he and fellow midfielder Moises Caicedo had the backing of former Blue Jon Obi Mikel in the summer.

“If we’re going to be successful next season, Enzo needs to find a way to get Enzo Fernandez and Caicedo, he needs to find a way to get the best out of these two players, because for me they are world class players, they are fantastic players,” Mikel said at the time.

Now, then, the onus is on Fernandez to prove he can deliver and make sure Chelsea get back to being the powerhouse we once knew.
