The Magpies had an underwhelming summer window and missed out on a number of targets, so clearly Eddie Howe will be eager to reinforce this winter.
It appears a striker is on their shortlist as they look to bring in a backup to Alexander Isak, especially if Callum Wilson departs for Fulham.
With that said, Newcastle are set to tussle with Barcelona for one on the continent.
Barcelona are set to rival Newcastle for Jonathan David
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Newcastle United are set to face competition from Barcelona for Lille striker Jonathan David.
David has started the season in prolific form, netting eight times in 13 outings which follows a 26-goal campaign the previous year.
Barcelona are planning on making a move for the 24-year-old next summer – when he’s due to become a free agent.
Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on signing David.

David, who’s been labelled ‘one of the best strikers in the world’ per Tony Marinaro, ranks in the top nine per cent for non-penalty goals per 90 compared to his positional peers across Europe, as per FBref.
The Canada international also sits in the top three per cent for pass completion, evincing his ability to link play.
If Newcastle were to land his signature, it’d be a real coup.
