Report: Manchester City now eyeing £60m Rodri replacement who Liverpool looked at this summer

Manchester City continued to win at home this weekend but they know they have a big decision to make on potentially replacing star midfielder Rodri this season.

Rodri has been ruled out for the season through serious injury and it remains to be seen whether City will go with what they have or look to act in the winter window.

Of course, bringing Ilkay Gundogan back has turned out to be a blessing with Rodri’s injury, while young star Rico Lewis can also play there.

However, with Arsenal and Liverpool putting City under so much pressure, a new face might be needed.

And according to Football Transfers, the man being looked at by City right now is Porto star, Alan Varela.

Manchester City looking to sign Alan Varela

According to the report, City have compiled a list of potential replacements for Rodri and Porto star Varela has come out as one of the top names on the list.

It’s claimed that Varela has a release-clause of around £60m in his contract and crucially, City do not see that as too much money.

With Rodri out for the season, this is new territory for the title holders as Pep Guardiola looks for a solution to the Spaniard’s absence.

Varela has starred for Porto for some time now and Liverpool were among the teams keen on Varela just this summer.

City may need to spend to keep up

While we’ve spent the last four years drooling over how good Man City are and the talent they possess, there is no doubt Rodri being out is a blow.

With that in mind and after selling Julian Alvarez for big money in the summer, City may well feel the need to go and spend a bit this time round in January.

A player like Varela makes sense but the question for Varela himself is if and when Rodri returns, will he even feature at all.
