Revealed: Man United transfer bombshell emerges after Ashworth exit

Man United are working under tight financial restrictions and are unlikely to make any transfer moves in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The Red Devils, who have allowed sporting director Dan Ashworth to leave the club after just five months in the role, have long had concerns over Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

Those concerns have been exacerbated by the decision to sack Erik ten Hag and replace him with Ruben Amorim.

Sources say it will be “difficult” for the club to give Amorim any chance to improve his squad in the January window despite their sub-par form this season.

It is believed signings will only be possible through the sale of current first-team assets.

Amorim is likely to have to wait until next summer before he is able to shape the squad to his liking at Old Trafford.

Ashworth’s departure came as a shock after a protracted compensation battle with Newcastle, who placed him on gardening leave before his United move was finalised in the off-season.

United signed big-money stars Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and Noussair Mazraoui in the summer window.

The Red Devils sit 13th in the Premier League table after their 3-2 home loss against Nottingham Forest on Saturday (7 December).

Amorim has won just one of his four top-flight games since succeeding Ten Hag – a 4-0 triumph over Everton at the beginning of December.
