Robbie Fowler has tipped Amadou Onana to succeed at Aston Villa following his £50m move from Everton.
Writing in the Sunday Mirror (28 July, pg. 73), Fowler believes Onana has the potential to succeed in the Premier League, despite Everton fans’ lack of remorse for his departure.
He said: “I don’t think he had the best of seasons at Everton and maybe not too many tears were shed by Evertonians when he left.
“But, at 22, he still has the potential to grow in the Premier League.
And with someone alongside him like Barkley – and (Unai) Emery’s coaching ability – Onana could thrive at Villa.”
Everton made the right decision with Onana sale – but must find a replacement
If given the decision between the sale of Onana and Jarred Branthwaite, Everton fans would pick Onana, every day of the week.
The Belgian became a regular at Goodison Park following his move from LOSC Lille last summer and made 37 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing a single assist.
He will be remembered for his infamous penalty miss against Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie in December, which led to the Blues being knocked out of the competition and denied a semi-final encounter with Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
Onana tarnished his reputation amongst the Everton faithful that night, some believed he still possessed the quality to become a main figure at Goodison Park, too many fans had lost faith in the midfielder.
His sale provided much-needed funds for the club, as the Toffees generated £17m profit from the £33m they paid Lille for his services last summer, and eases the pressure to sell other stars such as Branthwaite, who has been the subject of interest from Manchester United in recent weeks.
Everton are left with James Garner, Idrissa Gueye, and Abdoulaye Doucoure as the club’s senior central midfielders with the latter two on the wrong side of 30.
Sean Dyche is eyeing a move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips who will be available again this summer following an unsuccessful loan spell at West Ham and could be available on loan or for a cut-price fee (Liverpool ECHO, 24 July).
The Blues have made encouraging moves in the transfer market so far securing the signings of Illiman Ndiaye, Jasper Lindstrom, and Jack Harrison but must turn their attention to an Onana replacement.
