Ange Postecoglou cannot convince Tottenham officials that his football is good to watch after they were “lucky” to draw with Rangers at Ibrox, Robbie Savage says.
Writing in the Daily Mirror‘s print edition (14 December, page 57), Savage said that following Spurs’ 1-1 Europa League draw with the Gers on Thursday, pressure on Postecoglou will only mount further.
The Light Blues took the lead through Hamza Igamane early in the second half as Philippe Clement’s side outplayed the visitors at times, but Spurs equalised with 15 minutes left through Dejan Kulusevski.
Savage said: “Tottenham were lucky to escape from Ibrox with a draw in their Europa League Battle of Britain against Rangers, and now their season has reached the crossroads.
“Ange (Postecoglou) has stuck to his principles – but he can’t keep going to board meetings and telling the directors the football’s enjoyable to watch when they are losing more than they win.”
Rangers could have sealed Ange Postecoglou’s fate at Tottenham
While the Gers weren’t necessarily under much pressure to beat Tottenham on Thursday – with Sunday’s League Cup Final against Celtic in mind – they were disappointed to only collect a single point at Ibrox.
Dominant almost from the first whistle and seeing several chances denied by another former Celtic man in Fraser Forster, Clement’s side would have been more than worthy winners if not for Kulusevski’s strike.
The Light Blues’ domestic form has only recently begun to recover from a sluggish start, but the draw with Spurs was the latest of several results on the continent which have been hugely impressive.
The Gers couldn’t quite put Spurs to the sword as they did against FCSB and OGC Nice, but the manner of their draw may still prove to be one of the final straws for Postecoglou in North London.
Postecoglou didn’t always have Rangers’ number when leading Celtic to multiple domestic honours, and it seems that despite Tottenham’s vast budget by comparison, he’s still yet to tame the Ibrox bear-pit.
In other Rangers news, Clement has been told not to start one “scarred” player at Hampden due to his history against Celtic.
