David Edgar hopes for stability as Rangers have appointed Fraser Thornton as their chairman.
The Ibrox outfit announced via their official website on 14 December that the former council member of the Scotch Whisky Association will join the club on Monday, 16 December – the same day as Patrick Stewart who will be the CEO.
John Gillian, the club’s interim chairman, issued a statement welcoming Thornton, with his three-decade-long experience in the international drinks industry, to Ibrox.
He said: “On behalf of the board, I’m delighted to welcome Fraser to the club as Chair.
“As a lifelong supporter and season ticket holder, he has a deep knowledge of the club which together with a highly successful executive track record and an impressive range of non-executive experience makes him an excellent fit for this role.
“We look forward to welcoming him, and our CEO Patrick Stewart to their new roles, on Monday.”
Reacting to this development on X, Heart and Hand’s Edgar wrote: “Hopefully brings stability.”
Rangers will be looking for Fraser Thornton to have an instant impact
In the short term, Gers could look to Thornton to bring a blend of strategic oversight and operational efficiency to the club, leveraging his extensive experience in the international drinks industry and his leadership roles in various organisations.
With his background in sales and finance, Thornton is likely to focus on strengthening the club’s commercial operations and stakeholder engagement.
His familiarity with Rangers as a lifelong supporter and season ticket holder should ensure decisions are made with the club’s heritage and fan base in mind.
Thornston’s experience in managing large-scale operations across different regions could translate into effective management of the club’s day-to-day affairs, particularly in navigating the complexities of football governance and commercial partnerships.
Given his recent role as Interim Chair of Scottish Golf, he might also introduce some innovative governance practices or community engagement strategies and work in tandem with Stewart.
Hopefully, this can kick start a positive era for the Ibrox outfit which brings in a lot of success on and off the pitch.
