Graeme Souness hopes The Friedkin Group can get Everton back to the top after a “slow demise” at Goodison over the last three decades.
The Liverpool legend has sent a tribute to the over 130-year-old ground ahead of the Merseyside derby on Saturday [7 December] in the Premier League and wants the incoming owners to get the recruitment right at the Toffees.
In his column in the Daily Mail [7 December], Souness wrote: “I enjoyed a really good lunch at Anfield on Friday with Forever Reds, the Liverpool ex-players’ association, which raises money for charity.
“It was great to catch up with old friends, particularly Alan Hansen after his return to good health. It’s perhaps fitting we got together on the eve of what will be the final league derby at Goodison Park, a venue that holds such great memories for us all.
“I, for one, will be sad to see Goodison go. It was the first English ground I visited as a youngster with Edinburgh Schoolboys, and I always remember the majesty of those enormous old stands.
“It was regal at a time when Everton were nicknamed ‘The Bank of England’ and recognised as one of the top three clubs in the country.
“Sadly, over the past 30 years, there has been a slow demise, and it is important that the new owners get their recruitment right, as that’s not been the case for a long time.”
Goodison Park is in its farewell season, with The Blues set to move to Bramley-Moore Dock next summer.
Dan Friedkin needs to hash out Everton transfer policy
The Toffees have seen their prospects dwindle since Farhad Moshiri gained complete control of the Merseyside outfit, with the transfers during the British-Iranian businessman’s reign falling short of expectations.
Sean Dyche has been able to maintain the Blues’ top-flight status, but there is a feeling amongst the Goodison faithful that they shouldn’t be in a relegation scrap to begin with.
The English manager has done himself any favours in the current campaign, with his team sitting just five points above the drop zone going into the Liverpool clash.
Everton fans want to see the back of the 53-year-old head coach, but it looks like he’s bought himself more time after the Toffees won 4-0 against Wolves on 4 December.
Dyche has a critical few weeks ahead, though, with the Merseyside outfit set to face Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City after the derby at Goodison.
The Englishman could likely find himself out of a job if the Blues fail to get any points in the upcoming fixtures.
It would be embarrassing for the Toffees to enter the new stadium playing Championship football, so fans can’t wait for Dan Friedkin to make his way to Goodison.
TFG will have a long list of tasks as soon as they make their way to Merseyside, and one of them will be deciding on Dyche’s future.
