Dean Saunders has urged the Everton midfielders to help an isolated Calvert-Lewin after Natalie Sawyer described him as “anonymous” in the 1-1 draw versus Fulahm on Saturday (26 October).
The Toffees secured a late point against Fulham thanks to a Beto goal in additional time after Calvert-Lewin had a strike chalked off for offside.
The striker struggled throughout the clash at Goodison Park before being taken off Beto, who ultimately salvaged a point, which left Sawyer feeling sorry for him live on talkSPORT (27 October).
She said: “He played that lone striker role and at times he does look quite anonymous because no one is really helping him out.
“As much as it’s great so see him regularly playing now, because he’s been hampered by injuries for so very long, you also have to feel a bit sorry for him because he doesn’t get that service. We can’t see the best of him right now because he’s on his own.”
Saunders leaned on his own experiences as a striker and replied: “If you were coaching against Calvert-Lewin through the middle and you’ve got two centre-backs, you say ‘never, ever is Calvert-Lewin allowed to get hold of the ball without any contact, there’s two of you marking him. One of you gets in front of him and the other sweeps round and covers in case he rolls you’.
“Now if you’ve got somebody like Bruno Fernandes making runs past you and getting near you, that causes the centre backs a problem now because one can’t go as tight as he likes because there’s a distraction.”
Saunders and Sawyer respond to Dominic Calvert-Lewin Everton showing v Fulham
It wasn’t a classic at Goodison Park but the Toffees will be pleased to get a point despite arguably being second best in the end.
Seeing Beto coming on to grab a late equaliser was excellent but it has to be said that Calvert-Lewin struggled once again.
The Englishman has had some positive performances where he has looked more like the player that supporters know he can be.
Against Aston Villa earlier in the season, the striker was superb and arguably could have scored two or three but still performed well.
It wasn’t his night against Fulham which was summed up by his goal being ruled offside in the first half.
After what Saunders has said, it could be wise for Sean Dyche to see the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil getting closer to the striker to make things happen for him.
Calvert-Lewin has undoubted qualities but needs better support to allow him to show them off.
