Journalist shares what senior figures haven't forgot amid King bid for Rangers chairmanship

Rangers senior figures would oppose a bid from Dave King to return as chairman at Ibrox, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

On page 70 of the print edition of the newspaper on September 17, Calum Crowe reported that fellow members of the boardroom are against the idea of King taking back the reins, as John Bennett announces he is stepping down.

King’s leaving the club in a “hole financially” alongside some purported poor business decisions are considered to be factors which negatively affect the view of him returning as chairman, a post he initially took up in 2015 and eventually appointed Steven Gerrard as manager.

Arguably the most important boardroom decision yet at Rangers lies in the club’s immediate future – not to mention a CEO appointment must still also be finalised.

King throwing his hat into the mix through the national media is unsurprising given what Keith Jackson described as a “hostile” reaction [16 September] from the Ibrox directors to his interest in regaining the top job.

The Gers shareholder has already laid into existing members of the board for their mishaps regarding the refurbishment works at the club’s stadium [Rangers Review, 16 September], and a return would surely provoke a disharmony among the support who are split between his role in the 55th league title, and his questionable financial calls.

Conflict at board level then seeping down into the fanbase is the last thing needed at the moment in Govan, where the 2024-25 season already hangs on a knife edge as Philippe Clement’s side play catch-up.

Summer spending was always carried out with the disclaimer that players had to be shifted – not all of them were and others were offloaded at a slashed fee – as fans call for stability and transparency.
