Rangers player reacts to Vaclav Cerny outburst at fans after footage emerges

Kieran Dowell admits he doesn’t know what happened with Vaclav Cerny after his outburst at Rangers fans in the 1-0 win against Hibernian.

The Gers scraped past Hibs at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on 29 September, with the game full of controversy at either end.

Before Cerny was substituted, he appeared to hit back at jeers from the home crowd before being spotted deep in talks with Philippe Clement.

Speaking to News Letter (30 September), Dowell shared his thoughts on the situation.

“I don’t know. He’s probably had a long week himself. He might have felt a bit leggy and thought, I can’t do that one,” he said.

“But we all know coming to this club that the demand is to play forward and try and score goals and attack.

“I think that the manager is of the same mindset as that. So I’m not sure, maybe it was just a moment in the game, but we’re all on the same page that we want to go forward whenever possible.

“I think since the manager has come in, that’s the way he wants to play football”.

Fans are key to a player’s success at Rangers so without them, Cerny will have little ground to stand on.

Cammy Bell reacted to the footage and believes that although the whole situation is new for the Czechia international, he should have just “got on” with it rather than reacting [BBC Sportscene, 29 September].

Indeed, the fans expectations are some of the highest in football and rightfully so. The club are one of the most successful teams in the world and have a massive history, which some players don’t realise.

Since arriving, Cerny has had a fairly positive impact and seems to have bettered Clement’s attack.

The Wolfsburg loanee has made the right-wing spot his own and has benefitted the likes of Cyriel Dessers due to the chances he can create.

His outburst against Hibs is the first of its kind we’ve seen from the attacker, and hopefully, it’s his last.
