Sean Dyche believes Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite still has “a lot of learning” to do despite his performances last season.
The Englishman has found himself sidelined for most of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign and hasn’t yet been fully reintegrated into the Toffees’ squad.
Speaking to the media in quotes relayed by the Liverpool ECHO [7 November] ahead of the trip to West Ham on 9 November, Dyche reacted as he continues to be questioned over his decision to bench Branthwaite.
“He’s had one season in the Premier League. Don’t get me wrong, one very, very good season but it’s still only one season in the Premier League,” he said.
“He’s got a lot of learning to go and a lot of developing to go in my opinion. Fitness is a big part of that to physically be out there.
“He was out quite a long time. He came back in and got re-injured, so we didn’t want that of course”.
Sean Dyche needs to trust Jarrad Branthwaite for Everton again
The start of the 2024/25 Premier League season was a rough one for Dyche’s men. They were the biggest under-performers at the time and looked set to be relegation fodder.
Recently, their form has picked up and the Merseyside outfit has made their way to sixteenth in the table but it feels like more could still come from the Toffees.
Branthwaite was by far and away one of Dyche’s best players last term and although injuries may have hindered his progress somewhat, it still feels like he could have a lot to offer the team.
While the 53-year-old may want to take his time with bringing the youngster back into his squad, there’s not likely going to be a better chance than in their upcoming game against Julen Lopetegui’s men.
The Hammers are one of the other top-flight sides who have been below-par this season and don’t seem to have offered much threat in attack.
Only time will tell what Dyche decides to do but on paper, the smart decision seems to be starting Branthwaite and seeing how he gets on.
