Everton manager Sean Dyche has admitted Dele Alli is only just “breaking into training” as he continues his recovery from injury.
The England international is no longer contracted at Goodison Park, but the Toffees have allowed him to continue his rehabilitation and held talks with Spurs to reach an agreement to be able to offer him a new deal.
While it remains to be seen if the Blues will offer the attacking midfielder a fresh contract, Dyche has refused to be drawn into speculation and instead focused on Dele’s fitness.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo on Sunday (28 July) he said: “Dele is getting fitter but only really just breaking into training.
“Forgetting about the contact situation. He’s generally with us and getting fitter.”
Will Everton re-sign Dele Alli amid Tottenham contract update?
Everton have a big decision to make when it comes to Dele’s future this summer as they need to weigh up the pros and cons of potentially offering him a new contract.
On the one hand, if the midfielder can get back to his best Dyche will have one of the Premier League’s most creative players who at his peak was starring in Champions League campaigns and blowing pundits and fans away.
On the other, Dele hasn’t played regularly at the top level for several seasons now and didn’t even manage to step foot on the pitch once last term as suffered injury setback after setback, much to his own and fans’ frustration.
In an ideal world, the former Spurs star would have demonstrated his fitness throughout pre-season and blown Dyche away, but his continued rehabilitation has meant that he hasn’t had such an opportunity.
Hopefully, the Blues will be able to reach an agreement on a short-term incentivised deal that will suit all parties.
That way, they don’t risk harming themselves financially and Dele will be able to get back playing regularly.
