Senior Rangers ace missing from squad tonight ahead of transfer exit - report

Connor Goldson is not in the Rangers squad to face Birmingham City as he is on the verge of agreeing a deal to leave, according to the Scottish Sun.

The paper reported via their website on 24 July that the defender is about to secure a move to Aris Limassol after holding talks with the Cypriot club over the weekend.

He had flown with the squad for the preseason friendly but will now not feature as a transfer exit appears to be imminent.

Philippe Clement is reportedly looking to use the centre-back’s “hefty wages” to bring in new signings.

A move was expected this summer although the destination was not initially clear despite the links to Aris, but it looks like they have moved quickly to push forward amid reported interest from other clubs [Scottish Sun, 23 July].

Doubts over the Cypriots’ ability to afford Goldson’s contract were dismissed by the This Is Mappa podcast on 21 July when the potential for a move first emerged.

And after being dropped by Clement late last season suggestions of issues between the defender and the Ibrox management have emerged [24 Sports, 23 July], although they appear not to have been in evidence from outside if that is the case.

With James Tavernier closing in on a departure as well, most likely to Trabzonspor in Turkey [The 4th Official, 20 July], Clement is expected to get the benefit of around £75,000-a-week on the wage bill to work with once both deals are done [David Edgar, 22 July].

The new season is already close but with progress towards multiple exits now appearing the manager will hope to react by securing replacements as soon as possible.
