'Serious Issue' - Keith Jackson: Rangers player can no longer be trusted by Clement

Keith Jackson believes that Rangers captain James Tavernier can no longer be trusted by Philippe Clement.

The 33-year-old started the 1-0 win over Hearts at Ibrox on Sunday, 10 November, and even provided the assist for the winning goal.

However, the Daily Record journalist claims that the right-back no longer knows if he’s going to be playing in every game.

He told Daily Record’s Hotline: “The captain of Rangers Football Club now no longer knows if he’s going to be playing from game to game. If it’s a big game, he can’t be trusted. This isn’t something you explain, ‘Yeah, Sports Science says this.’ This is a serious issue.”

James Tavernier must not be picked just because he’s Rangers captain

Despite his role as the captain, Tavernier should not be assured a starting position merely due to his title.

His place in the team should be earned through consistent performance both in training and during matches.

Clement’s apparent uncertainty about the 33-year-old’s role indicates that his recent performances haven’t met expectations, particularly in high-stakes games where reliability is crucial.

If Tavernier is not proving himself as the best right-back option on the pitch, it’s reasonable for the Belgian to consider alternatives, especially if the data tells him to do so.

It might be a difficult conversation to have with the Englishman but he knows that he’s no longer at the peak of his powers.

With his testimonial coming up, Tavernier will want to be remembered fondly by the Ibrox faithful and he’s got to accept whatever the manager decides.
