Steven Thompson and Ryan McGowan were shocked at Kenneth Vargas’ miss for Hearts in their Ibrox clash against Rangers on Sunday.
Having taken an early, deserved lead through Cyriel Dessers, Rangers stepped off the gas and Hearts had an excellent chance to level the game through Vargas at Ibrox (10 November).
Vargas found himself with Hearts’ best chance of the game and failed to take it as he hit the woodwork, shocking Thompson and McGowan.
Speaking on BBC Sportsround (10 November), McGowan said: “That’s an absolute sitter, he has to score that. We spoke about it first half, seemed to be a bit tentative.
“I thought he took his touch too far, thought he took his touch too far but Butland stayed on his line, got plenty of time to think about it, he has to score. in those types of moments, you cannot miss opportunities like that.”
Thompson replied: “Such a big, big opportunity. He does take a touch, there is a hesitation and then it’s almost at the last second he pulls the trigger, he’s got to hit the target, I’m sorry but that’s a huge miss.”
Kenneth Vargas saves Rangers from embarrassment
In what was such a closely contested clash, Vargas’ miss would prove to be crucial from a Rangers perspective as Hearts succumbed to defeat at Ibrox. Rangers started the game well, taking the lead after just six minutes but performance levels dropped after the goal and Hearts didn’t take advantage.
Failure to win would have been incredibly detrimental not to only Rangers’ league position but potentially to the future of Philippe Clement who remains under threat.
Had Vargas taken the opportunity, the Gers would have potentially found themselves 11 points behind Aberdeen having played the same number of games.
While that wouldn’t be unsalvagable, it would be hugely challenging and perhaps Rangers got away with one at Ibrox against Hearts.
Nonetheless, their win tops off what has been a positive week for Clement’s side, following their Europa League draw against Olympiacos midweek as well as their semi-final victory against Motherwell last Sunday, 3 November.
In other Rangers news, Gennaro Gattuso confirms that there is nothing in the speculation linking him with the job at Ibrox.
