Steven Thompson was left surprised at Matthew MacDermid’s decision not to book Rangers defender Jefte for a “cynical” foul during the first half against Hearts.

The Gers were one goal to the good at the time of the incident, thanks to a goal from Cyriel Dessers inside seven minutes at Ibrox on Sunday (10 November).

Alan Forrest was brought down by the Gers full-back but avoided a caution, much to the surprise of former Gers striker Thompson.

Talking on BBC Sportsround (10 November), he said: “I’m surprised that’s not a yellow card.

Former Hearts defender Ryan McGowan replied: “You don’t get them here” before Thompson rounded out with: “It was quite a cynical foul from Jefte to bring him down.”

Rangers enjoy victory against Hearts

Rangers’ victory against Hearts was huge for several reasons. First and foremost, it prevented the gap at the top of the table from widening any further with the Gers now nine points behind Aberdeen.

While it is still far from an ideal situation, it is considerably better than the position they could have found themselves in if they tasted defeat.

The win is arguably even bigger for Philippe Clement who will be relieved to end the week on a high following their creditable 1-1 draw against Olympiacos in the Europa League midweek.

The Belgian will remain under pressure at Ibrox, but the victory provides potential breathing space for the time being.

With a crucial Scottish League Cup final in December, it is vital that they find their feet and start a positive run.

Rangers need to continue picking up results and momentum can often be key in doing so, taking each game as it comes.

In other Rangers news, David Edgar believes that the Gers need to sign a striker who is an upgrade on Cyriel Dessers.
