Alan Shearer gushed over Son Heung-min after his “unplayable” Tottenham display in the 5-0 win against Southampton.
The former Newcastle United striker named the Spurs captain in his Premier League Team of the Week [17 December] after contributing one goal and two assists in a demolition of Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday [15 December].
However, the attention now turns to the Carabao Cup clash against Manchester United and with the Spurs captain in a rich vein of form, he could single-handedly secure his side’s passage to the semi-finals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium [19 December].
Son Heung-Min can ease Ange Postecoglou pressure at Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou eased the growing pressure on his future in North London over the weekend, but now the Tottenham boss must prove he can string together consistent results.
David Ornstein reported on 15 December, after the victory on the South Coast, that the Australian retains the board’s faith despite recent results.
But the stance is, of course, subject to change, and a chance of ending Spurs’ 16-year wait for silverware in the Carabao Cup would undoubtedly end all doubt.
And Son will be relied upon to deliver the goals in North London when Tottenham welcome Manchester United on Thursday (19 December) – his display against Southampton suggests he could run riot.
The 32-year-old ran the show at St Mary’s, completing 94 per cent of his passes with three of those defined as ‘key’.
He also created two big chances, leading to assists for Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison [Sofascore] in a superb attacking showing.
Although his defensive side of the game lacked efficiency on the day – he failed to win any of his contested duels – he rolled back the years as his attacking prowess ultimately led to the dismissal of Russell Martin at Southampton.
He recorded seven shots on goal, with one blocked, two off-target and four on-target, doubling Spurs’ advantage after only 12 minutes of action.
Ryan Manning endured a torrid afternoon matching up against the South Korean on the right flank and undoubtedly would have thanked his lucky stars that Postecoglou removed the forward at half-time.
With an additional 45 minutes’ rest, Son will be raring to go against Manchester United on Thursday and could lay down a statement of intent in North London ahead of another pivotal clash in the capital against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday [22 December].
