Ange Postecoglou could face the wrath of Tottenham fans after starting Timo Werner against Brighton on Sunday (6 October).

The Australian has made seven changes from the side who beat Ferencvaros in Europe on Thursday (3 October), though Werner is one of the players to keep his spot in the starting XI.

While Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson return to the team, as confirmed by Spurs via their official X account [6 October], fans will still be concerned by the German occupying the left wing.

Timo Werner starts for Tottenham v Brighton

Understandably, Spurs fans are frustrated with Werner’s recent performances, especially having started against both Manchester United in the Premier League and Ferencvaros in the Europa League.

However, with Son Heung-min injured, Postecoglou’s hands look tied over picking the German for the starting XI, supposedly handing Spurs a handicap before the match has even begun.

Despite hitting the target with 100 per cent of his shots against Man United, he still managed to waste an xG of 0.61, as per FotMob, which was even worse versus Ferencvaros, hitting the target with zero per cent of his efforts [FotMob].

The 28-year-old also only completed 50 per cent of his dribbles in the Europa League, winning just 33 per cent of his ground duels, and just being a source of frustration for the fans.

While Dejan Kulusevski has been moved into midfield for the 2024/25 campaign, there is no reason why Postecoglou could not switch him to the left-hand side and bring another midfielder in.

His Man of the Match performance against the Red Devils should be reason enough, having created nine chances, three of which were big chances, maintaining a 100 per cent shot accuracy in an 8.7 out of 10 rating [FotMob].

In other Tottenham news, one star cannot hide behind his 93% display after being slammed as “frightening” v Ferencvaros.
