Pundit View: Tottenham must sign 'Top level' star, just made his int'l debut

Paul Robinson believes Tottenham should be looking at securing Angel Gomes’ signature following his call-up to the England squad.

Spurs are eyeing a move for the 24-year-old, who currently plays his football with Lille in Ligue 1, with Newcastle United, Liverpool, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund all interested [The Sun, 11 September].

Gomes made his international debut for the England senior squad, having been called up by temporary manager Lee Carsley, and is believed to fit the mould at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “He’s the type of quality player you want your club looking at, obviously. If there is a route back to the Premier League for him, Spurs won’t be the only suitors for him.

“Lee Carsley is looking more and more likely to get the England job on a permanent basis, and with that in mind, he’s going to get more minutes at international level. He’s a top-quality player.

“A move back to the Premier League won’t be out of the question. If he’s playing at the top level, you want your club to be involved in the race. He fits the mould of the type of player Spurs would sign – young, English and talented.”

Given his links to Manchester United, it would certainly be interesting to see the midfielder return to the Premier League after leaving Old Trafford on a permanent deal.

The 24-year-old has gained a huge amount of experience since moving to the French league, having made 122 appearances for Lille to date, even notching 16 assists across the last four seasons.

Gomes is still learning and developing, but if Postecoglou were to add someone of his calibre to the squad, it could take Spurs even closer to challenging for one of the top spots in the Premier League.
