Brennan Johnson was more than just a goalscorer as Tottenham claimed an impressive 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday (29 September).
The Welshman has experienced a tough few weeks at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having removed himself from social media after receiving hounds of abuse from a section of fans.
Those days look to be behind him, however, with four goals to his name in his last four appearances in all competitions, and even working hard defensively to ensure Spurs came away from Old Trafford with all three points.
Speaking via BBC’s Match of the Day 2 [29 September], Glenn Murray said: “This is what I was most impressed with. It’s right at the end and he comes back to help Porro, doubling up on Garnacho.
“He wins the ball once, and falls over, but his next action is doing just enough to block the cross. That epitomised his afternoon.”
Brennan Johnson becoming complete player after Tottenham v Manchester United
Johnson was an absolute nuisance for Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford down the right flank, and that was at both ends of the pitch for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
The 23-year-old remained calm on the ball, completing 82 per cent of his passes, knowing exactly when to burst into the United penalty area and unleashing one of his three total shots [FotMob].
He was extremely unlucky to smash the base of the post, unable to add to his early opening goal, but he was in the right position to assist Dejan Kulusevski’s deft lob over Andre Onana.
Not only was Johnson a fiend in the final third, he completed 100 per cent of his tackles, and made three recoveries and one interception while defending Spurs’ three-goal lead.
While he could only win 33 per cent of his ground duels, his desperation to get a foot in, also making two fouls, was testament to the hard work on show to secure all three points at Old Trafford.
The winger now ranks in the top 68 percentile for non-penalty goals, the top 91 percentile for assists, and the top 92 percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area, but it is defensive work that can make him a complete player [FBref].
He ranks in the top 95 percentile for blocks, which shows just how defensively-minded he can be if Spurs need to grind out a win, especially against the likes of Man United.
In other Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou to be handed a “big blow” as one ace could be out until late December.
