Alexander Smith is to take advice from Rangers after being called up by both Scotland and the USA, according to the Daily Record.

In an update on the paper’s website on 7 August (9.15am) it was explained that the Gers talent is wanted for a long-term commitment by both international set ups after playing for each at age-group level so far.

That split is likely to continue for now after Scotland named him in the Under-17 squad at the same time as the American invitation. Until he is capped at full international level the 16-year-old isn’t obliged to commit either way.

Rangers secure the attacking midfielder on a three-year pro contract last season after fighting off strong interest from the English Premier League and MLS [Fabrizio Romano, 28 May].

Rangers to advise as Scotland and USA battle for teenager

Until there is a requirement to decide one way or the other it would probably make sense for Smith to keep his options open.

Being eligible for two national teams allows him to judge where he is likely to get more of an opportunity to play, and after that where he has more chance for international success.

It may be a few years off yet but he will surely want to keep the door open to both for as long as possible.

Rangers will have an interest in ensuring he doesn’t play too much football too young as a result, as there is sure to be an eye on him breaking into the first team at some point before long.

If the likes of Arsenal were attempting to bring him into their set up [The Sun, 22 February] he clearly has talent and the Light Blues pulled off a coup to hold onto him.

Todd Cantwell
Alexander Smith could be a long-term Rangers answer to the departure of Todd Cantwell in future.

The attacking midfield role has become underwhelming in the senior side under Philippe Clement, especially since the exit-bound Todd Cantwell lost form after Michael Beale left.

Smith could be the long-term answer at the position if his progression if managed properly, so while his ability means he is in demand domestically and on the international stage the player’s interests will have to be kept in mind.

In other Rangers news, Aberdeen could now beat the Light Blues to a new wonderkid signing.
