Dan Bardell believes Philippe Clement will keep his trust in Cyriel Dessers despite not scoring for Rangers against Hearts.
Some sections of the Light Blues’ supporters were surprised to see the Nigeria international begin the season as the main number nine once again.
The 29-year-old missed three chances on the day which reinforced how fans were feeling ahead of the Scottish Premiership season.
Some criticism has been shut down after a late equaliser against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday night (6 August).
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested that Clement looks likely back the Gers’ number nine ahead of Danilo this season.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Bardell said: “It is difficult with Dessers because it is clear that the manager likes him.
“If he played last season and has started this one then it looks like he’s going to stay. If Clement hasn’t called on Danilo from the bench, it shows that there is a backing there.
“It’s another game where he hasn’t scored in the league so fans will be on his back and maybe asking for a change.
“You can see some evolution in the squad but that position has stayed the same from last season so fans are unsure. He drew a blank in a goalless draw so fans are going to be frustrated.“
Cyriel Dessers to get Rangers backing
The Nigerian is certainly someone who divides opinion amongst the supporter base at Ibrox for his performances.
What can not be argued is his goal output in his debut season in Glasgow where he registered 22 goals across 54 appearances in all competitions [FotMob].
The thing that frustrates fans is that the striker arguably should have scored more and was guilty of missing plenty of top chances.
In the Premiership, Dessers fell below his expected goals despite scoring so many goals which shows how many chances he was afforded.
Things may have been different if Danilo hadn’t picked up a season-ending injury early on in his Rangers career.
