'Big loss' - King claims Ange decision backfired after recent Tottenham injury news

Bryan King doesn’t blame Ange Postecoglou for Son Heung-min picking up an injury at Tottenham.

The ex-Spurs scout insists he also would have started the South Korean in the UEFA Europa League.

Son started the 3-0 win against Qarabağ FK at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (26 September), picking up an injury late in the second half.

It ruled the Spurs captain out of the club’s 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday (29 September), with Timo Werner struggling to make an impression in his place.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t believe Postecoglou made a mistake by starting Son in the Europa League, despite the decision backfiring.

“You never know these things are going to happen,” King said.

“If I were Postecoglou, I would have played him in the Europa League. In addition, I’m sure Son wanted to play. However, sometimes these decisions backfire and Son picked up an injury.

“We don’t know the full extent of the injury yet. However, he is a big loss, there is no getting away from that.

“I certainly wouldn’t blame Postecoglou for playing him though, because Son is usually a player who stars every chance he gets to play.”

With all due respect to Qarabağ, that is a fixture which Spurs would have expected to win with or without Son on the pitch. Therefore, the decision to start him ahead of a trip to Old Trafford might have baffled a few.

Son is one of the busiest players in the Premier League, often starting every game for club and country, travelling long distances to represent South Korea.

As a result, he could have likely used a rest. Instead, Postecoglou opted to start with him, a decision which would backfire.

However, it wouldn’t be fair to blame the Australian. It demonstrates that he is taking the competition seriously by playing his best players. Everyone at Spurs will now be waiting anxiously for an update on Son.

In other Tottenham news, King was left stunned by one “outstanding” player’s performance against Manchester United on Sunday.
