Tottenham have been urged to sign a brand-new centre-back by 1 January amid an update on Ashley Phillips.
Ange Postecoglou is dealing with an injury crisis so bad that it has sparked a behind-the-scenes investigation in North London.
Spurs have been left particularly short in defence, with Postecoglou expected to have no choice but to take a “risk” with Ben Davies as a result.
To address their injury crisis, the club are considering bringing Ashley Phillips back from his loan spell at Stoke City in January [via The Standard, 12 December]. However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think that this is the solution.
“We should be going out and signing established centre-backs,” Wenham said.
“What we shouldn’t be doing is recalling somebody who is part of the long-term plans and playing out on loan at the moment. Phillips should absolutely be left at Stoke City to continue developing.
“Spurs should be doing everything in their power to sign a centre-back, they should be working on it as we speak so that a player is ready to come through the door on 1 January.”
Tottenham to have brand new defender signed by 1 January?
Postecoglou is under severe pressure in North London after Spurs’ poor form as of late. However, it is fair to suggest that a big reason for that poor form is the club’s injury crisis.
Therefore, should Postecoglou remain Tottenham manager until January, he will want signings through the door to address these recent injury woes.
It has been made clear just how small Spurs’ squad is. As a result, they should be going out and signing brand new, ready-made players, not bringing back loanees who are already signed to the club.
In other Tottenham news, Thomas Frank joining the club could be on the cards after a Brentford update.
