Sam Avery wants Jarrad Branthwaite to start for Everton over Michael Keane in the game against Southampton.
The Saints will host Sean Dyche’s team in the Premier League on 2 November in what could be an essential fixture when it comes to the relegation battle.
Branthwaite has been out of action for the last few weeks and only returned as a substitute in the final minutes against Fulham in the 1-1 draw on 26 October.
Keane has partnered James Tarkowski at the back in the 22-year-old’s absence, but speaking on talkSPORT [1 November, 13:35], Avery has called for a change in defence.
“I think we’re still conceding way too many goals, and I’d like to see Branthwaite come back in the starting lineup this weekend,” he said
“If it’s a choice between Michael Keane and Branthwaite, that’s like a choice between a Scotch egg and fillet steak.”
Jarrad Branthwaite could improve Everton defensively
Branthwaite has become a key player for Dyche since returning from his loan spell at PSV Eindhoven.
The English international was influential for the Toffees last season as the team avoided the drop into the Championship.
In the opening five games of the season, the Blues were winless with four defeats, and the 22-year-old didn’t feature in any of those games.
But as soon as the centre-back came back into the team, playing the full 90 minutes against Crystal Palace on 28 September, Goodison Park saw its first win of the campaign after a 2-1 final score.
Since then, Dyche has steadied the ship to a certain extent, although Branthwaite has been unavailable for the most part.
Keane has played admirably in recent weeks, and the former Manchester United defender’s goal against Ipswich Town on 19 October was impressive, but Branthwaite is widely considered our best defender.
Southampton are struggling at the moment, sitting bottom of the league table, and it would make sense for the Blues to play their strongest side against them and try to increase the points gap.
