Seven Liverpool players ranked in current top 100, ahead of Lamine Yamal and Cole Palmer

Arne Slot hasn’t made many changes to the Liverpool squad left behind by Jurgen Klopp.

Mainly because the German left the new Liverpool manager with trophy-winning players and some of the best performers in Europe.

Therefore, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Liverpool are flying under Slot and are sitting top of the Premier League table.

It also shouldn’t be a surprise that seven Liverpool players were named in FourFourTwo’s top 100 players right now.

The lowest-ranked player came in at 70, whilst one individual managed to get into a highly-contested and talent-ridden top ten.

The top five players were dominated by individuals from Real Madrid and Manchester City, respectively, which shouldn’t be a surprise given their dominance in recent years.

Ballon d’Or favourite Vinicius Jr topped the list, with Manchester City’s goal machine Erling Haaland as the runner-up, England’s Jude Bellingham third, followed by Kylian Mbappe and then Rodri.

Andy Robertson was the first man out of the traps for Liverpool and he ranked 70th, which is pretty good going for the 30-year-old because his performances have dipped in the last 18 months.

Another Klopp signing enters the picture in 43rd, Alexis Mac Allister, who helped his nation win another trophy this summer when Argentina won the Copa America.

Not far behind in 39th was Barcelona transfer target Luis Diaz, who has made a stunning start to the new Premier League season, scoring five goals and supplying one assist.

Then, along came the much bigger fish with Alisson Becker ranked 16th, he was the highest-ranked goalkeeper in the top 100, with Virgil van Dijk coming in at 15th behind William Saliba.

England’s flying star Trent Alexander-Arnold missed out on the top ten and was rated 11th, higher than his England teammates such as Phil Foden, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer.

But the man sitting at the top of the tree for the Reds is Mohamed Salah and it shouldn’t be a surprise.

Lamine Yamal might be the next big thing on the block, but he was behind Salah, as well as Kevin de Brunye and Jamal Musiala.

On Alexander-Arnold: “For years he has had to deal with accusations of his defensive capabilities,” wrote FourFourTwo. “But 2024 and particularly his form since Arne Slot arrived at Anfield shows that Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of the best right-backs in the world.

“So much of Liverpool’s build-up still comes directly from Alexander-Arnold, even in the post-Jurgen Klopp era. His passing range and vision remain unmatched from that position. It is why Gareth Southgate wanted to play him in midfield just to get him in midfield.

“But at heart, Alexander-Arnold is just a world-class performer. It will be interesting to see how his game develops in 2025, with becoming England’s first-choice right-back and a move to Real Madrid both realistic propositions. Liverpool fans will hope the latter remains merely a rumour, but the club will have to pay him the big bucks to sign him up for another four years.”

On Salah: “The age of 32 is often when lightning-quick wingers or forwards may just start to lose a bit of their magic, ever so slightly,” claimed FourFourTwo. “But that is not the case with the Egyptian king Mohamed Salah. There is a reason Liverpool fans of every generation say he is one the very best to play for the club. And why so many fret about the possibility of him not agreeing a new contract and leaving at the end of this season.

“Earlier in his career, Salah was all about his rapid pace and remarkable balance when cutting inside. These days his game is far more advanced. His razor-sharp movement and intelligence around the box remains unrivalled in the Premier League. Salah will also probably go down as the greatest African player in history.”

Liverpool players out of contract

You have to question how the club have got to this stage where three crucial players are out of contract next summer.

Perhaps the most worrying is Alexander-Arnold because he is their biggest asset from a financial perspective and a certain Real Madrid is lurking around the corner.

If all of those three players are still at the club next season, then it increases Liverpool’s chances of winning the big trophies under Slot.

But if all three leave, then it just makes life for the Dutchman very difficult because there doesn’t seem to be any replacements in sight.
