Pundit backs Levy to sign 'Cheaper' Gyokeres alternative at Tottenham amid release clause update

Alan Hutton has admitted he doesn’t think Tottenham chief Daniel Levy will be willing to pay the fee required to sign Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are on the lookout for a new number nine to finally replace Harry Kane ahead of the new season, with various centre-forwards being linked with a summer switch to North London.

One name reportedly on Spurs’ radar is Sporting forward Gyokeres who may be available for a cut-price this summer, even though his contract contains a release clause in the region of £84million [Give Me Sport, 17 July].

Although Hutton believes the Swedish international would thrive under Postecoglou, he thinks Spurs and Levy would be looking at Ivan Toney as a cheaper alternative to fill the void at the top end of the pitch.

“The way Tottenham play, if you’re a decent striker, you’ll get a lot of opportunities,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“It’s high-octane football with crosses into the box, one-twos, James Maddison and people like that, the full-backs coming in so playing in that Tottenham team you’re going to have lots of opportunities.

“He’s a guy who knows where the back of the net is, so he’s going to get the opportunity to score a lot of goals, but the problem for me is the fee.

“£80million-plus, I know it could possibly be lowered but are they willing to pay that? I’m not sure, I don’t really know their situation in terms of finances.

“Is it a risk? That amount of money on somebody who doesn’t really know the league, of course it is, but all transfers are a risk.

“When we talk about Ivan Toney and what he’s done in previous seasons, he knows the league inside out, he can handle the pressure so could he be a better option and a cheaper one.”

Are Tottenham close to signing Ivan Toney in the summer transfer window?

Levy and Postecoglou both know Tottenham need a new striker this summer, but that doesn’t mean the Lilywhites will be willing to throw money around recklessly ahead of the new Premier League season.

Levy has never run the club in that manner. Spurs don’t tend to overpay for players and they have already splashed the cash on Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray and are eyeing deals for other creative players.

Daniel Levy will be under pressure to spend at Tottenham.

With those targets already on the agenda, it feels unlikely that Postecoglou’s side will be rushing to pay a nearly £80million fee for a player who has never managed to perform in the Premier League.

Hopefully, a new striker will arrive in North London before the new Premier League season gets underway but it seems it is much more likely to be Toney than Gyokeres.
