Tom English has namedropped Rangers after Celtic were smashed 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on 1 October.

Celtic were beyond humiliated by Nuri Sahin’s men in Germany as Karim Adeyemi managed to bag himself a first-half hat trick.

Rangers welcome Lyon to Ibrox on 3 October as they look to build on their positive start to the Europa League this season.

Writing for BBC Sport (2 October), English said: “This was a monumental humiliation for Celtic.

“A team that once again fell into the trap of believing that just because you can play freewheeling football against St Johnstone in Perth on a Saturday means that you can try to do the same against Borussia in Dortmund on a Tuesday.

“Pragmatism? Closing the space? Staying in the fight? Keeping it tight and compact in the face of Dortmund’s obvious pace and danger?

“No, no. They set up like they set up against St Johnstone and Falkirk and Hibs and Rangers”.

Rangers set to play Lyon in Europa League

Alan Brazil has predicted a “cracking” game against Lyon [talkSPORT, 2 October, 09:34am], with the Gers set to face one of their toughest challenges of the season so far.

After a slow start to the season, Rangers have bounced back with four straight wins and clean sheets.

Their 3-0 loss against Celtic has kicked Philippe Clement and his squad into action, and it is now set to be tested against French giants Lyon.

John Bennett’s sudden resignation certainly hasn’t helped matters but despite the club being a bit of a mess at the moment, it feels as if the Ibrox outfit is on the right track [The Athletic, 14 September].

Lyon finished sixth in Ligue 1 last term and while that may not seem all that impressive, the fact that the club are backed by American billionaire John Textor and have a mountain of big names within their ranks could be a cause for concern.

Players such as Alexandre Lacazette and Wilfried Zaha lead Lyon’s line and could cause quite a problem for Clement’s men with Cyriel Dessers admitting it will be a “good test” [Daily Record].

In other Rangers news, a Ridvan Yilmaz exit update has emerged at Ibrox.
